Computer Account and Access Issues

How do I change my QUT-Access Password?
(i) Go to access.qut.edu.au and login using your QUT-Access username and password.
(ii) Click on Change QUT-Access password and accept the Information Facilities (IF) Rules.
(iii) Enter and confirm your new QUT-Access password, ensuring compliance with the password requirements, and click on Submit.
(iv) You will then be prompted to enter your current QUT-Access password (old password), then click on Submit again.
(v) A message will then appear at the top of the page advising that your QUT-Access password has been successfully changed.

What is Challenge Response?
Challenge Response is a mechanism that allows you to supply the answers to a preset list of questions, in order to subsequently obtain a new password online should you forget your password. We recommend that you setup your Challenge Response answers the first time that you login to QUT-Access. After doing this, you can obtain a new password at any time of day or night by successfully answering at least three of the Challenge Response questions, according to the answers previously supplied by you.

I can not login with my username and password?
Ensure that you have entered the correct username and password or your current QUT-Access password has not expired.
If your password has expired and you are unable to change it via Computer Accounts, use the Challenge Response to generate a new password for yourself. After this, you can then change your password to one of your own choice. If you cannot do this, then contact the IT Helpdesk to have your QUT-Access password reset after verifying your identity.

I have forgotten my QUT-Access password so how can I change my password?
Visit the QUT-Access website, and use the Challenge Response to generate a new password for yourself. After this, you can then change your password to one of your own choice. If you cannot do this, then contact the IT Helpdesk who can reset your QUT-Access password after a quick identification check.

Can I cut and paste?
Yes, but you have to use the keyboard shortcuts. Highlight the text you wish to copy and press "Control-C" to copy text and "Control-V" to paste text in the desired position within the document.

Can I redirect my QUT E-mail (WebMail) to an external email account such as hotmail?
You can redirect your e-mail from your WebMail account to an external email account by:
- Login to WebMail
- Select "Options" from the left-side menu
- Select "Forwarding" from the top menu
- Enter external e-mail address in the text box
- Select "Start" to implement e-mail redirection

Can I send e-mails to a group of people?
In the To, Cc or Bcc fields of an e-mail, seperate the e-mail addresses with a comma (,) eg. a.smith@student.qut.edu.au,b.jones@student.qut.edu.au

How can I access QUT E-mail?
From the QUT website (www.qut.edu.au), select "E-mail (WebMail)" in the Quicklinks section.

How can I sort or look at my messages in the order I receive them i.e by their date?
In the Inbox window of QUT E-mail, click on the "Received" heading and the messages will be sorted by the received date and time.

How do I change my password for QUT E-mail?
Your password for QUT E-mail is synchronised with your QUT-Access password so when you change your QUT-Access password, you automatically change your QUT E-mail password as well.

How do I send an attachment?
In the Compose window of QUT E-mail, follow these steps to attach a file to an e-mail:
- Click "Browse..." button in the Attachments section
- Locate and select the file you wist to attach and click "Open"
- Click "Add" in the Attachments section to attach the file

I am using the correct username and password, can send e-mails but I am not receiving any e-mails?
If your QUT E-mail account is setup correctly, then it may be that you have exceeded your e-mail quota. In the Inbox window, check the quota status bar to ensure you're not over quota.
If your problem still persists, then contact the IT Helpdesk.

I have deleted some e-mails but the messages remain in my QUT E-mail account?
To delete the e-mails off your QUT Email account, you need to empty your Trash folder by clicking on "[Empty]" on the left-side menu.

I have not received any e-mails for some time now?
Check to see if you have multiple pages of e-mails by viewing the e-mail numbers. If your problem persists, then contact the IT Helpdesk.

I have started a new e-mail message but would like to finish it later?
In the Compose window, click on "Save Draft" button at the top to save and finish the e-mail message at a later date.

What does Bcc mean?
Bcc stands for Blind Carbon Copy which allows e-mail addresses of recipients listed in this field to be invisible to other e-mail recipients.

What is the size limit of an e-mail that I can send?
The size limit of an e-mail sent through QUT Email (WebMail) is 5 MB which includes the headers, body and any attachments.

QUT Dial-in

Can my family use the QUT Dial-in service?
No. Any use of a QUT-Access or QUT Dial-in account by a non member of QUT is a breach of the Information Facilities (IF) Rules and is against the Manual of Policies and Procedures (MOPP).
Users of information systems at QUT have the right to use the information facilities and resources that are required for their studies at the university. A user must not:
- disclose any password or access code associated with their QUT-Access account to any other person
- allow any other person to use their account
- do any other act which may prejudice the security or integrity of their QUT-Access account
The University reserves the right to monitor information systems and networks and carry out detailed security audits of any systems and data by authorised personnel.

How do I setup QUT Dial-in?
Go to www.its.qut.edu.au/offcampusaccess/dialin which contains information on QUT Dial-in, configuration guides and access phone numbers.

I do not have a QUT Dial-in account, can I pay for one?
QUT no longer provides subscription-based accounts due to the increase in competition from commercial Internet Service Providers (ISPs).

What are the costs involved in using QUT Dial-in?
You will incur charges from your telecommunications provider for the cost of the phone calls made to QUT. Within Brisbane, this should be at the cost of a local call however, check with your telecommunications provider to ensure calls are not charged at STD rates.

What do I need to access QUT Dial-in?
To use QUT Dial-in, you will need:
- a computer with an internet browser
- a Dial-up modem
- a phone line
- a current QUT Dial-in account

Who is eligible to get QUT Dial-in accounts?
Students who are eligible to get QUT Dial-in accounts are:
- Full-fee paying International/Overseas students
- Postgraduate Research students (not Postgraduate Coursework students)
- Successful receipients of the Equity Computer Scheme
To check if you have an account, login to Computer Accounts (click on the link from the QUT homepage) and look for QUT Dial-in in the services table.
