Frequently Asked Questions

[Print-friendly version]

These are the most commonly-asked questions about the Multiple Choice Test Marking & Analysis Service. If there is a question you would like to ask that is not listed below, please ether call Shirley Neill on x81211 or email scanning@qut.edu.au.

Q This is the first time I have run a multiple choice exam. What do I need to do?
A All you need to do is fill in a test answer sheet with the correct answers and write MARKER in the surname field and the subject in the Subject Code. The dots also need to be filled in (click here for an example). You will also need to fill in the Multiple Choice Exam - Marking & Analysis Request form. This form should be placed on top of the exam batch.

Q

Where do I take the exams to be processed?
A You need to deliver the exams to Integrated Help Services, located in V207 at Gardens Point campus. Alternatively, you can deliver the exams to the IT Helpdesk on your campus, who will then arrange for the exams to be delivered to Integrated Help Services at Gardens Point for marking. If you cannot deliver or collect the exams yourself, you may nominate another staff member in your area to do this on your behalf.

Q

How long does it take to process the exam?
A There is a maximum 3 working day turnaround time. During peak times this may take a little longer.

Q

Where can I get the test answer sheets from?
A

These should be supplied through your School/Faculty. Check with your School/Faculty administration staff regarding the ordering procedures for your area as they have to be ordered from QUT Printing Services.

Q

Is the Marking & Analysis Request form online?
A Yes, you can download the form here.

Q

Can I have fractional marks?
A No, only one full mark can be given to each correct question.

Q

Can results be sent via e-mail?
A Only the data file which you can upload into Curwen can be emailed. Also, if individual item responses are requested, these will be e-mailed.

Q

What happens with the exam batches after they have been processed?
A Once the exam has been processed and you have received your files in email, you are required to collect the original batch plus the full reports (either by yourself or a nominated staff member). There could be ambiguous answers which need to be checked. If you are going on leave please nominate a staff member to collect the exam on your behalf as Integrated Help Services is not responsible for storing exam batches.

Q

Can the batches be sent in the internal mail?
A

No. For security reasons we cannot send the batches back via internal mail. Our policy requires sighting of a QUT staff ID card before batches can be released.

You can deliver exam batches for marking at the IT Helpdesk counter on any campus - we can then arrange for them to be delivered to Integrated Help Services at Gardens Point. To utilise this service, you will need to ensure that you have a Marking Request form completed and attached to the exam batch when submitting exams for marking.

If you are not based at Gardens Point campus, you can also have your marked exams transferred across to your home campus for collection. Simply let us know if you require this when you submit the exams for marking. When you collect your marked exams, you will be required to produce your QUT staff ID card as proof of identification, and sign the Marking Request form to indicate that you have collected your exams. If you are authorising someone else to do this on your behalf, they will need to do the same. Exams collected in this manner are to be collected from the IT Helpdesk on your home campus.

Please also note that if you are submitting or collecting your exams at a campus other than Gardens Point, the turnaround time will be slightly longer than the standard three (3) working day turnaround for this service.

Q

I have a question where more than one answer can be correct due to a question which was deemed ambiguous. Can this be done?
A If all answers are correct you can either indicate this by filling in all answers or simply deleting the question altogether. If you choose the latter, note that the total mark will be one less than the number of questions appearing on the exam. That is, if there are 20 questions then the mark will be out of 19 and not 20. You can no longer have either/or (e.g A or D) as correct responses.

Q

Even though my exam has already been processed?
A No. Please return the batch for re-scanning.

Q

What hours are you open?
A Our office hours (V207 at Gardens Point campus) are 9:00am to 5:00pm Monday to Friday only.

Q

My exam is urgent. Can it be done immediately?
A Unfortunately everyone is in the same position with School/Faculty deadlines, as well as the final deadline for all results to be in to Examinations. We work on a 'first in first served' basis to keep it fair for everyone. The sooner we receive your exam batch, the sooner you will get your results back. We try to accommodate everybody's needs within reason.

Q

Can I do Sub-Tests?
A Yes. Any combination of questions from the exam can be a Sub-Test. All you need to do is provide a test answer sheet with the correct answers to the Sub-Test questions for each Sub-Test.

Q

Can I have a penalty for an incorrect response (guessing)?
A Yes.

Q

Can I have some questions worth more marks than others?
A No.
